Is it "No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith"? No, but it's good to hear an up-and-coming Motörhead playing these songs when they were still fresh. The good news in the show included here is a very good sounding recording (almost to the point that you wonder where it has been for 40 years). Early Motörhead recordings can be very shoddy and the band have been exploited with many badly recorded live albums like "Blitzkrieg On Birmingham 1977".
This is a budget edition of the box set "Motörhead 1979", which I found a wee bit out of my price range, so I opted for this purely to get the concert on the 2nd CD. I don't need to review "Overkill" the album, it's a 5 star Rock classic, arguably Motörhead's best LP. Despite the negatives mentioned already, I would still say it's an essential purchase for fans of the classic line up, just keep your earlier editions with the bonus studio tracks. What a shame it was never released in their lifetime of the band, but as we know Lemmy would have probably blocked it, not being one to look back. I suspect its from Fast Eddie's, as I think he was more the archivist. (Same applies with the 'Bomber' special release which I also highly recommend) The pre-release blurb for these two 79 releases suggest its come from the estates of the members, but more info would have been welcome. Also, I would have liked more info on the live tape and who had it all these years and how it was discovered. What I would have wanted was slightly thinner paper but more pages as it is a very thick guage paper so it included more live colour photos of the band in action. I don't mind the text, yes peripheral people, but they were there at the time and they bring a different angle. The bonus is that I don't think the tape has been edited so you get a lot of chat between songs by Lemmy and Fast Eddie.
Lemmy is mainly clear and all instruments well represented. This recording is warts and all but it is loud and crank up your stereo and you are at the gig itself. Don't expect 'No Sleep till Hammersmith' quality where the best takes from three nights had been cherry picked and the instruments balanced in the mix and probably some overdubs added. While I suspect Cameron Webb has done wonders and there is no one better at understanding the Motorhead sound, if it is a soundboard, there is nothing that can be tweaked too much if say, a guitar solo is half buried, as that is how it would have sounded on the night. It's a wall of sound just like at their live gigs so I doubt its a multi track live recording, but more likely a sound board recording.

I for one have been waiting years for a full Overkill tour live recording in decent quality and this is it. The real reason for long term fans to buy this is the bonus live album and I recommend it as long as you don't have too high expectations. I agree there should have been bonuses of the non album tracks on the original album cd as running time would have allowed. The original album is a metal classic and in my opinion the best set of songs Motorhead ever did which is borne out by the fact of how many stayed in the Motorhead set over the years and way after the demise of the classic line up.
